10 Ways To Save On Your Wedding Flowers

10 Ways To Save On Flowers

Afraid flowers will bust your budget? Check out these clever tips to nip skyrocketing floral expenses in the bud:

0109_flowers.jpg

Research budget blooms
“Consider an affordable, year-round flower such as stock, which comes in many colors, including pink, red, and lavender,” says Michael Gaffney, founder of the New York School of Flower Design. Other picks: roses, chrysanthemums, and carnations.

Let them do double duty
Reuse your ceremony flowers at the reception—on an entrance table, perhaps, or in the ladies’ room.

Go Monobotanical
Use just one type of flower—roses, say—for all the centerpieces. The look is stunning and cost-effective. “You’ll get a better deal if [your florist] can purchase flowers in bulk,” says Dawn Kelly of New York’s Soirée Floral Event Design.

Use bigger blooms
In season, fluffy-headed blossoms like hydrangeas and peonies can stretch a budget, because you need only a few to nicely fill a vase.

Be flexible
“Don’t insist on specific flowers,” says Donna O’Brien of Beautiful Blooms in Philadelphia. “Instead, tell your florist the colors and the look you want.” Giving her a wider berth will allow her to consider the most budget-friendly options.

See what’s in stock
For the best deals, choose blooms that are available in your area.

Choose simple arrangements
Less labor equals more savings. A loose grouping of flowers is not as time-consuming to arrange as a centerpiece that involves wiring lots of individual stems.

Raid Grandma’s cabinets
Borrow teapots, water pitchers, silver bowls—anything that can be used in place of a traditional vase that you’d have to buy or rent.

Add flavor
Buy herbs—basil, sage, rosemary—from a garden center, place them in tiny terra-cotta pots, and group them as centerpieces.

Think filler
Greenery saves money and gives a centerpiece a big wow factor. “Greens are about one-third the price of most flowers,” says Gaffney. Eucalyptus, lemon leaf, or pittosporum can supplement flowers in centerpieces and bouquets, or act as filler in urns lining an aisle at the ceremony.

9 Last Minute Wedding Details You Don’t Want to Forget

27 Feb 2016 Posted by trubridal in Wedding Ideas

Patrick Moyer Photography

In the hustle and bustle of all the day-of excitement, it’s very easy for even the most detail-oriented bride to forget to take care of some last minute wedding details, whether it be to make sure Aunt Vicky’s all-vegan, gluten-free dish with the special heirloom tomatoes is accounted for or to pop a couple of breath mints before the big kiss.  Heck, I know I would DEFINITELY forget something on my wedding day, if not multiple things.

Hence, I’ve made this list of what I think is most important of the last minute wedding details that threaten to ruin your big day (so sorry I can’t find an embroidered velvet pillow for Uncle Harry’s Shih Tzu). Here goes!

REMEMBER TO GET YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

last minute wedding details

Michael Kaal Photography

Without the license, you can’t get married. And your officiant can’t provide it for you, so you and your spouse are going to have to hop on over to city hall to apply to get married. This should take place approximately a week before your wedding. So, this task will be during one of the most stressful weeks of your life, but make sure it’s your top priority until you get it safely out of the way.

BRING SNACKS AND REFRESHMENTS!

last minute wedding details

Spottswood Photography

I feel like this is a huge minor detail that people often overlook, but just because it’s your big wedding day and you feel like you can take on the world doesn’t mean that your biological systems can (no offense). In short, don’t let you or your wedding party become hangry!

When you’re getting ready with your Bridesmaids or groomsmen, make sure that there are finger foods and refreshments to snack on. No sense in making a huge mess while getting ready, but there’s no sense in allowing your stomach to go empty, especially since bridal parties start getting ready in the late morning or early afternoon.

PACK FOR YOUR HONEYMOON

last minute wedding details

Anjuli

THIS. Your wedding is such a huge event that it’s probably blocking out the peripherals of your mind as well. But don’t leave it to the last minute to throw everything into one huge suitcase and hope for the best as you embark on your honeymoon! Research weather conditions and what attire you would need for activities in your honeymoon location, and try to pack ahead of time. You don’t have to cram packing all in one session — keep in mind that this is three hours of your time that could have been spread out in your spare time before the wedding. You don’t want to be spending precious honeymoon time choosing which pair of socks you should bring on your trip.

UPDATE YOUR WEDDING WEBSITE WITH DAY-OF INFORMATION

last minute wedding details

Bliss and Bone

This can include anything from projected weather and traffic conditions to last-minute updates on wedding logistics if they seem to be changing. As much as we pray for it not to happen, there’s usually a hiccup or two waiting for you at the venue. If you need to relay information fast, make sure to distribute it to guests who are present and update the wedding website for those who aren’t. Most days, guests have a data plan and access to a smart phone — and word-of-mouth travels fastest.

HAVE PAYMENT AND TIP SORTED OUT BEFORE THE BIG DAY

last minute wedding details

This means having paid the necessary deposits still need to fulfill or completing final payments if that’s within your power. Additionally, calculate tip and put the payment in separate envelopes that are labeled with the vendor’s name. That way, when your wedding is wrapping up, you can thank your vendor in person and give them tip without having to stress out about dealing with them after the fact.

WRITE YOUR THANK-YOU NOTES!

last minute wedding details

Boston’s Terrier

A bit tedious, but it’ll save you time after the wedding as well! Be sure to write thank-you notes to your guests and vendors, especially since they’ve most likely bought you and your spouse a gift or did you a service. Even if they didn’t, write a thank-you note anyway because they took the time to attend your wedding and wish you and your spouse a happy marriage.

Plus, people just love receiving actual hand-written notes in the mail. Do this, and your level of awesomeness will automatically shoot up in people’s eyes (as if it wasn’t high enough already).

PREPARE GIFTS FOR THE WEDDING PARTY

last minute wedding details

Je T’aime Beauty

Your party of friends have been with you through the wedding-planning process thick and thin. Express your thanks by preparing gifts for them! These gifts don’t have to be extravagant or anything, but it does mean a lot to the people in your wedding party when you show that you took the time to put some effort and meaning into making gifts that they will appreciate. Popular gifts for the ladies usually consist of beauty products or jewelry, and for the guys? Fancy cigars and razors.

PREPARE YOUR EMERGENCY DAY KIT

last minute wedding details

via 100 Layer Cake

Accidents happen all the time. Whether that’s tripping in your gigantic floofy ball gown and falling onto the grass or having some drunk guest accidentally slosh his wine on your front, you need to take a deep breath and say, “Accidents happen.” Good. Now you can prepare for it.

The bridal survival/emergency kit will have essentially all the little things that you need to fix things up, including Band-aids, wine-spot remover, chapstick, breath mints, and sewing needles and thread. While you might think to yourself that it’s really not necessary to prepare all of these things, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Otherwise, you might be mourning the loss of your beautiful vintage veil because you’ve accidentally torn it.

CONFIRM LOGISTICS WITH VENDORS (ESPECIALLY TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING)

last minute wedding details

Jose Villa

While confirming times with vendors seems like a big DUH, do your best to confirm with all of them anyway, ESPECIALLY when it comes to logistics regarding your guests. For me, I feel very antsy about transportation just because it always seems that traffic or getting lost gets in the way, and you don’t want your guests to arrive late to your wedding. Additionally, be sure to check in with the hotel to make sure that all guests booking a room are accounted for. Nothing’s quite as awkward as having a guest show up to the check-in counter just to find out that her room hasn’t been reserved.

PREPARE A LIST OF MUST-HAVE SHOTS FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER

last minute wedding details

Ashlee Raubach

Taking pictures is hard work for both the photographer AND the models. If the photographer has to spend extra time coming up with ideas and guiding you and your fiancee into poses that you could have figured out and practiced beforehand, it takes away time from taking more photos. Not a good deal.

Brainstorm a couple of ideas for what sort of poses and shots you want  your photographer to get and relay that information to your photographer. That way, the photographer will be able to approach the venue with an idea of where and how to get the best shots while still getting what you want out of the bargain.

10 Bridesmaid Questions Answered: Who To Ask, What To Expect And More

26 Feb 2016 Posted by trubridal in Wedding Ideas

10 Bridesmaid Questions Answered: Who To Ask, What To Expect And More

It’s just not a wedding without Bridesmaids. Whether you have one or 10, they’re the ladies who are going to make sure you have an awesome bridal shower and a bachelorette party you, inadvertently, may not remember.

The bride/Bridesmaid relationship is a tricky one, though. You already have a solid relationship with these women, yet you are asking a lot of their time and resources in order to be in your wedding.

We found and answered 10 of the biggest questions about Bridesmaids. How many do you need? Who should even be one? Can you ask them to go tanning before the wedding? Everything you need to know is below.

1. Q. Who should I ask to be in my wedding?

Your wedding party should be made up of people who play an important role in your life: your sister, your old college roommate, etc. The party can be as big or as small as you like, just know you don’t have to ask your entire sorority pledge class, no matter what you promised 10 years ago.

2. Q. When should I ask people to be in my wedding?

You’ll first need to figure out the size of your event. If you’re having a small wedding, a large wedding party may seem off-balance. Once you have a date set, start asking people so they can block out the date.

Be sure to ask everyone around the same time, especially if the bridal party knows each other.

3. Q. I don’t really get along with my future sister-in-law. Do I have to ask her to be a Bridesmaid?

Depends on the wedding you’re having. While it’s good form to include her, etiquette dictates that you’re not obligated. If you’re having a small wedding party — just a maid of honor and a best man, then you don’t have to. Most people don’t mind not being in the wedding party. It’s one less thing they have to worry about. There will be plenty of other family photos that they will be in. You’re the bride and can design the wedding party however you like — with or without unlikable in-laws.

4. Q. I have two best friends – how do I choose my maid of honor?

You don’t have to! If you have two close friends — or even two sisters — they can both me maids/matrons of honor. This may even be an advantage since it’s helpful to have an extra person when planning bachelorette parties, organizing the shower, etc.

5. Q. My Bridesmaids are annoying me – can I demote them?!

Given that they are your Bridesmaids, you had a strong relationship with them before you got engaged and hopefully will have one afterwards. That said, think about specifically what it is about the Bridesmaids that is driving you crazy. Are they not buying the dress you asked them to? Are they slow to plan a shower? (Maybe it’s a surprise!) When you feel annoyed, single out what behavior is annoying you and then you can work on fixing that problem.

If you have frustrations, be sure to address them in person. Problem solving needs to happen over a conversation, not a barrage of e-mails and text messages.

Make sure you are not the problem. Are you making unrealistic demands, such as making everyone wear the same, expensive shoe or getting their hair done at a pricey salon? Check out our piece about how to get your Bridesmaid not to hate you. Sometimes little things, like overtly asking them not to get you a wedding gift or easing up on the hair requirement, goes a long way.

6. Q. What can I ask my Bridesmaids to do?

Don’t they know they have to fan you while feeding you grapes? In all seriousness, there’s lots that they can help you do that is completely reasonable:

Pre-wedding tasks: Things like stuffing envelopes, welcome bags, putting together favors, folding programs, etc. Ply them with some booze and it becomes a bonding experience.

Pay for the Bridesmaid ensemble:  This includes the dress, its alterations and accessories. Sometimes brides like to make a gift of the jewelry, which is a nice gesture. Be upfront if Bridesmaids will have to pay for their own hair appointments on the wedding day. If you can afford to pick up the tab, by all means do so.

Help plan or co-host the bridal shower and/or bachelorette party: This doesn’t necessarily mean they have to pay for theses events — sometimes the Mother of the Bride or another relative likes to pick up the tab for the shower — but they should offer to help in some way. Bachelorette parties are usually paid for by everyone who attends — both Bridesmaids and other non-wedding party attendants.

Attend the rehearsal dinner and rehearsal ceremony: They should also attend at least one shower, unless they live far away.

Be social, act as a defacto hostess: If you know a shy cousin will be coming, ask a Bridesmaid to chat him up and make him feel comfortable. Naturally they should all be polite to the other guests, be feel free to point out guests who may be coming alone, etc.

Run last-minute errands: Someone may have to go on a last minute run to Walgreen’s, and the bride is not that person. You can ask Bridesmaids to do last minute chores, or even to greet vendors the day of if you don’t have a wedding planner.

Hold your dress while you peeSomeone has to. Ask the Bridesmaid with the biggest sense of humor.

7. Q. My husband has more groomsmen than I have Bridesmaids, what should I do?

The wedding party should be made up of your nearest and dearest — even if that is an uneven number. Don’t worry if there are more on one side than the other. It’s much better than asking a random person to be in it to even out the numbers. You can sort out how to get everyone up and down the aisle at the rehearsal.

8. Q. I think one of Bridesmaids may not be able to afford the dress, etc.

No matter how well you think you know someone, never assume you know anything about their finances, no matter their lifestyle. Just because your grad student friends lives on Ramen noodles it doesn’t mean she can’t afford to be in your wedding. Maybe she just really likes Ramen?

Once you have your bridal party set, send an e-mail outlining the projected costs. ($200 for the dress, $50 for hair the day of, etc.) People appreciate understanding costs ahead of time. If they don’t think they can afford it, they will let you know. Encourage Bridesmaids to share hotel rooms, etc. Be sure to add a note that if anyone needs help to let you know. The cost of a quietly paying for a Bridesmaid dress for your grad student friend is tiny compared to everything else you’re paying for in the wedding.

9. Q. One of my friends has put on some weight. Can I ask her to lose it before the wedding?

Short answer? No. You can’t ask people to adopt different grooming or lifestyle habits such as losing weight, tanning or changing their hair for your wedding day. When you’re asking someone to be in your wedding party, you’re asking them the way they are. If your friend has let themselves go a little, perhaps being in someone’s wedding is exactly the motivation she needs to get back to her healthy, svelte self.

10. Q. I was in a friend’s wedding four years ago. We are not close anymore. Does she have to be in mine?

There is no quid pro quo when it comes to weddings. You don’t even have to invite someone to your wedding just because you went to theirs. Your friend is probably aware that you aren’t close anymore, either. Since she played an important part in your life before, be sure to invite her as a guest.

6 Wedding Hashtag Tips No One is Telling You

6 Wedding Hashtag Tips No One is Telling You

It’s finally here! (Well actually, it’s been here for a couple weeks now). We’re beyond excited to present the new Instagram Gallery for your wedding website! We know that many of our users have been rearing to go on the wedding hashtag front for quite some time now, so we figured what better time to hash out (harharhar) some wedding hashtag dos & don’ts?

But wait. All that being said, maybe you’re not totally pumped after all. Maybe you saw this post and thought to yourself “Wedding hashtag? Social media has gone too far!”

That’s okay, but you still need to read this. Let’s face it, regardless of your personal feelings towards social media, the Instagram photos are going to happen, so you might as well be on board to reep the benefits. We guarantee that they’ll pleasantly surprise you. For example, we’d argue that social media has really upped everyones amateur photography skills —plus you’ll get to see your big day through the eyes of the people who mean the most to you. D’aww!

1. DO match your hashtag to your domain name.

This keeps things nice and simple for all your guests. Efficient = effective 99.9% of the time. Don’t feel pressured to come up with your own  couple catchphrase when you already have a killer domain name. Plus any tips or concerns we’ve covered in our wedding website domain name how-todouble as hashtag guidelines as well. Easy peasy.

2. DO make sure your hashtag isn’t already taken.

Test your desired wedding hashtag by typing it into the search bar in Instagram and selecting the “HASHTAGS” option right below. This is essential. The main purpose of having an event hashtag is to conveniently collect photos from your guests’ Instagram accounts all in two places (the hashtag’s feed on the Instagram app AND your Riley & Grey wedding website’s hashtag page)

3. DON’T wait for your wedding to start hashtagging.

Introduce your guests to your wedding hashtag in advance by hashtagging wedding planning pics or even other events, such as your engagement party or bridal shower, leading up to the big day.

Now, that being said…

4. DON’T go hashtag crazy.

Though your besties abroad will no-doubt appreciate all the behind-the-scenes snaps preceding your event, keep in mind that your wedding hashtag may be better off in your guests’ hands — meaning don’t get high off your own supply and overdue do it yourself. You’re using a wedding hashtag so you don’t have to do all the work of making sure all the memories get captured, remember?

5. DO remember that photos from private accounts are not visible to everyone, even if hashtagged.

Straight from the horses mouth:

“Someone who’s set their profile to private can add hashtags to photos and videos, but only that person and their approved followers or the people they send photos/videos to with Instagram Direct will be able to see that photo on the hashtag page. Private photos/videos, even when hashtagged, aren’t visible to the public.” (Instagram, as of April 2015)

Second, even if you and your guests are able to see most photos with your wedding hashtag in the hashtag’s feed on the Instagram app, because you’re all following each other, only hashtagged photos from public profiles will appear in the feed of your wedding website. Got it?

Consider creating a wedding Instagram account. We suggest the handle be the same as your hashtag and/or wedding website domain name.

And another important one: remember to actually hashtag your photos or they will not show up on your wedding website‘s Instagram gallery. We know some of you are scratching your heads while reading this, going “DUH!” — but just know that we’ve been in the wedding hashtag business for some time now (longer than a fortnight) and we find it necessary to mention this.

6. DON’T feel afraid to set social media boundaries for your wedding.

Requesting that you’d prefer guests to stay off their devices during some of the more intimate events in your wedding isn’t asking too much. Not that your friends and family are going to be taking mid-ceremony selfies, but special moments like your vows are always better when everyone is fully present and your loved ones aren’t watching the moment on a screen.

You know what lenses capture the highest resolution moments? The ones on our very own eyes balls.

Strategically placing a sign near the entrance of your ceremony venue will do the job just fine. A short and sweet message that reads something along the lines of “Be in the moment, y’all! Please refrain from using any devices during the ceremony. No worries, we’ve hired an amazing photographer who won’t miss a beat,” should get the message across without sounding uptight.
