Curious wedding facts

Curious wedding facts

The wedding bouquet. For the ancient Greeks and Romans, the bouquet was a mixture of garlic, herbs and grains. The garlic was meant to protect from evil spirits, the herbs and the grains were to provide fertility. In ancient Poland, it was believed that if the wedding bouquet was sprinkled with sugar, it will sweeten the wedding day and the couple’s family life.

The wedding cake. The cake has always played the capital role of the wedding celebration. The ancient Romans broke the cake over the bride’s head in order to symbolize fertility and abundance. Some other cultures put wheat, flour or cake on the bride’s head and then ate the rest of it. The British had a tradition to give cookies to all wedding guests. In the Middle Ages, the guests brought little cakes to the wedding celebration and put them on a separated table – the bride and the groom stood on both sides of the table and kissed each other. A young baker decided to unite all the small cakes and this is the way the idea of a multiple layer wedding cake was born.

The dress. Traditionally, brides wore white Wedding Dresses. In XVIII century, brides put on their most beautiful dress on their wedding day. In the Middle Ages, red was the main color for Wedding Dresses. Some brides wore different colored dresses – blue meant constancy and green – youth. In time, white earned the title – clarity. Nowadays, white is a symbol of the wedding and it is worn even by brides that are not getting married for the first time.

Honey moon. The groom used to kidnap the bride and hide her from her family and the whole town. The bride and the groom spent a month together and drank mead in order to keep the love between them burning. Here is how the inscription “honey moon” was created. Nowadays, honey moon is the time after the wedding when the newly married couple isolate themselves from the entire world and spends some time alone with each other.

The kiss. The first kiss that the partners share with each other in the end of the wedding ceremony, has a special meaning through the centuries. Many cultures believe that the spirits of the bride and the groom become one with the first kiss.

The ring. The wedding ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger on the left hand, because it is believed that there is a vain, which is connected directly to the heart. Among the English speaking cultures, the wedding ring continues to be worn on this finger.

The veil. Mystery and romance hide behind the veil for a thousand years. At first, the veil served as a protection for the bride from potential dangers. The more romantic interpretation is that the hidden things are more valuable and the bride’s face is more valuable when it’s hidden under the veil. The veil is also a symbol of youth and clarity.

Presented during Paris Fashion Week at Tony Ward’s new showroom Avenue Montaigne, the Fall/Winter 2016-2017 ready-to-wear collection showcases a variety of cool looks inspired by glaciers and the icy depths of nature. Featuring sheer ombre capes and crystalline embellishments, these gowns are the perfect getup to sparkle on the red carpet or in a winter wonderland soiree.

“Like a blast of pure freshness, icy watercolors and deep, vibrant tones compliment the richness of fabrics. Macramés, gazar and lace, mixed with one-of-a-kind embroideries, recreate light’s reflection on ice. For this season, the Tony Ward woman has many different faces and leaves a powerful impact; just like melting glaciers’ sharp shattered edges reveal pure waters underneath them. Winding forms embroidered in silk thread and asymmetrical applique shapes imitate these natural wonders, giving depth and originality to the looks. Tony Ward brings us a collection where layering and transparency transcend us into the wondrous natural kingdom, with blue, red, green and silver hues shimmering delicately into graceful silhouettes.”

Trend Alert: The 20 Most Stunning Bridal Capelets

30 Jul 2016 Posted by trubridal in Wedding Accessories

We’re obsessed with the trend for bridal capes (thanks Solange!) and we’re so excited that the look has made it off the catwalks and onto the stylish shoulders of real brides in the form of gorgeous, wearable cover-ups.

Super chic, and oh-so-practical too, check out our pick of beautiful bridal capelets with our resident wedding attire aficionado, Bené Eaton.

The 20 Most Stunning Bridal Capelets | Bridal Musings Wedding Blog

After swooning over the gorgeous dresses at this spring’s New York Bridal Market and following Elizabeth’s front row musings during this year’s Barcelona Bridal Week, it became clear that a few fashion trends definitely reined supreme.

My favorite trend from this year’s catwalks? Two words—bridal cape. The dramatic cape-like gowns displayed in the Jenny Packham and Pronovias 2016 collections won me over and convinced me that the bridal cape is here to stay.

If you love the look of a cape but aren’t quite sure about donning one on your big day, a bridal capelet is a fabulous alternative. A capelet can polish off any dress (as seen in the Ivy & Aster 2016 collection), and it’s also the perfect cover-up for a more traditional wedding or for an evening affair.

THE 20 MOST STUNNING BRIDAL CAPELETS

I’ve put together a list of the 20 most stunning bridal capelets. If you’re looking to add the final touch to your Wedding Dress, you must take a peek below.

How To Plan A Right Royal Wedding!

29 Jul 2016 Posted by trubridal in Wedding Ideas

If you’ve always hankered after a princess-style wedding, then this year’s Brides The Show has everything you’ll need to make it a truly royal – and memorable – event.

Hugo Burnand

MORE ABOUT BRIDES THE SHOW

Created by the team behind Condé Nast Brides magazine, Brides The Show features over 130 exhibitors, and this year’s show is crammed with royal appointments guaranteed to fulfill every bride’s dream. Here’s our right royal run-down of what not to miss:

The royal photographer

Kate and Wills’ wedding photographer, Hugo Burnand – who is also Tatler magazine’s society pages snapper – has curated a one-off exhibition of wedding images especially for Brides The Show. He will also be appearing in conversation, spilling all the juicy the secrets behind Kate and Williams’ wedding shoot, as well as advising brides-to-be about how to get the best bridal shots. Plus one lucky couple will also get the chance to win an engagement portrait with Hugo!

The royal couturier

Jenny Packham is the Duchess of Cambridge’s designer du jour, and she will presenting an exclusive catwalk show at Brides The Show on the opening night only (tickets are still available). Packham, the queen of red-carpet glamour, will be on hand to talk about her designs and one lucky bride-to-be will even have the chance to win a Jenny Packham bridal gown, worth £3000!

The royal make-up artist

A favoured brand of the Duchess of Cambridge, Bobbi Brown’s subtle make-up is a must-have for brides to be. Hannah Martin, their PRO Artist for the UK & Ireland created Zara Phillips wedding look for her big day, and will be dishing out beauty advice – as well as free Bobbi Brown products! TBC – at Brides The Show.

The (mini) royal fashionista

Children’s designer Nicki McFarlane will be at Brides The Show, and is the go-to to give your minis a royal make-over. Themother and daughter duo designed the mini-maid dresses for William and Kate’s 2011 nuptials – who can forget little Grace von Cutsem, Lady Louise Windsor and Margarita Armstrong-Jones in their pretty silk flower-girl outfits?

The royal venue

Want to recreate your very own royal love story? Then book one of The Historic Royal Palaces. Venues include The Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and London residence of Wills and Kate, the gorgeous Kensington Palace – come to the Show and book your dream venue. More of an outdoorsy bride? The Royal Botanical Garden Kew is also exhibiting at Brides The Show and offers a gorgeous backdrop for any wedding day.

The royal stamp of approval (literally)

Make your wedding feel like a royal affair right from the very start with Piccolo Press. Stationers to the Royal family, The Royal Society and the House of Lords and House of Commons. Alternatively, there’s The Wren Press, which earned itself a Royal Warrant in 2013. Heavily involved in the 60th anniversary coronation festival for Queen Elizabeth II, invites from The Wren Press are bound to impress your guests from the off.

The royal florist

Florist Zita Elze created a bouquet of flowers specifically for the Queen in celebration of the Alan Titchmarsh show, ‘The Queens Garden’ that aired in 2014. Could your wedding bouquet feel any more royal than knowing it was created by one of the Queen’s chosen florists?

The royal gift-list

Check out Wedgwood’s stand at Brides The Show for crockery and cutlery fit for a queen. Since the marriage of Queen Charlotte to George III in 1761, every British monarchy has had a Wedgwood collection. Time to give your gift-list a regal upgrade?

Wedding Events/Feast of Raynald Fossoway and Ceryse Hightower

28 Jul 2016 Posted by Guest in Wedding Ideas

8th moon, 315 AC

Gunthor Hightower had seen his share of weddings, but he had to admit none were more beautiful than this. His daughter looked especially beautiful in her cream dress adorned with emerald green jewels down the back, and Ser Raynald Fossoway looked particularly handsome in a fine velvet emerald green doublet to match. They were a perfect couple and a perfect match. The night was brilliant, as well. The stars were brightly lit outside, Gunthor could see out the window, the gods clearly looking down as the couples said their vows.

Ceremony

The ceremony was simple, but elegant. His daughter stood on the dais, her hands interlaced with her soon-to-be husband’s as the Septon said his words. He could see tears well up in her eyes, but she held her composure as befit a lady of the Reach, and eventually Lady of New Barrel. Ser Raynald, meanwhile, was the pinnacle of honor and virtue. He kept eye contact with his daughter, repeated the Septon’s words, and very politely kissed her when the vows were done. Gunthor must be honest, he had his doubts about the match that Otto arranged at first, but it was clear that Raynald was a good man, and that was no clearer than how he treated his daughter during the ceremony.

Feast

The High Table was made up of the two marrying families in addition to bride and groom. From the Hightowers of Sunhouse came Lord Gunthor, Alyssa, and their children: Otto, Addam and his wife Lyanna, and Alicent. From the Fossoways there was Addam and his wife Aemma, as well as Mira and her husband Horatio. The high table was set in front of the great hall in front of the arrangement of tables. The appetizer course was an assortment of apples, blood oranges, pomegranates, plums, olives, dragon peppers, olives, and turnips. The main course was roast boar caught just before the ceremony glazed in honey and spices. After the feast, the tables would be cleared away for dancing.

I’ve decided that it’s actively rude to bring your kids to a wedding! Argh!!! Feel free to change my view

28 Jul 2016 Posted by Guest in Wedding Ideas

I’m probably being completely unfair here, but i’m stressed and have decided to voice my unpopular opinion. I have decided that even if somebody’s wedding isn’t specifically a “child-free” wedding, parents should still try their hardest to leave the kids at home/with a babysitter/family member rather than bringing them along. UNLESS it’s a super child-friendly wedding with lots of other kids, activities, etc.

At a regular wedding, I actually can’t see a single reason why it would be fun for anybody to bring your young kids along when 95% of the other guests are adults. As far as I see it, the only benefit of bringing your kids is so that you don’t have to organise a babysitter. There are just a multitude of reasons why bringing your kids will suck for a) the parents, b) the kids, c) the bride and groom, 4) everybody else there.

  • Parents have to spend the whole night worrying about their kids, dealing with their behaviour, and keeping an eye on them in general.
  • They probably have to leave early so the kids can go to bed.
  • They probably can’t drink much, because, kids. Probably can’t dance much because, watching the kids.
  • There is great risk of the kids being disruptive during the ceremony, speeches, etc.
  • The children will most likely be bored out of their minds.
  • The bride and groom have to either make special arrangements for food, or accept paying for meals that fussy kids won’t want to eat.
  • Unless there is a “kids table” at dinner, (which in itself would probably be mayhem), you have to subject other child-free people to sitting at a table that includes other people’s annoying kids.

I am in general fine with kids, and we don’t want our wedding to be strictly “child-free” because everybody is having to travel to be there and stay the weekend etc. I wouldn’t want that to be a deal breaker for people that are important to us. But it just surprised me that nobody with kids thought to ask whether we were OK with the kids coming, they just assumed it would be fine. Or that they didn’t even try and work out a way of coming without the kids. Don’t they see that’s it’s just bad news for everybody?

Currently my main concern is tables. I don’t want anybody who has done us the service of leaving their kids at home to have to share with somebody who did bring their kids. It seems unfair. And I feel like it’s also unfair for somebody without kids to have to put up with a bunch of kids at their table. I don’t want a designated “kids table” because it would be chaotic, and the kids aren’t quite old enough to sort foody stuff out themselves (i’m talking like, 4 year olds). I feel like I have to put all the families with kids together, even though that may end up as a table of only 4 adults and like 8 kids. Its the only solution I can think of.

End rant.

Setting Up The Party

It can sometimes be intimidating to host a party in your home, but if you use these tips, it’s easier than you think. TIP: Use the furniture you already have in your home to create party stations. Here I used a few bar carts I have around my house to set up a Popcorn Mix-In Bar, Charmed Craft Table and Mini Dessert Table. If you don’t have bar carts, you could also set up party stations on sofa tables, bookcases and counters. Use your dining table as the party’s main seating area and you’re all set!

Decorating The Shower

When decorating your shower, first decide on a theme and color palette. This is my favorite part of planning any party. I normally start with an inspiration piece and when my friends at Oriental Trading challenged me to design a bridal around this set of 2-sided gold, aqua and pink napkins, I was all in! I now had my inspiration for the shower’s color palette. To give the shower a modern feel, I decided to add a bold pattern of black and white stripes to the design which is very on trend right now. Then I did what we all love to do…I scoured Oriental Trading’s website for fabulous tableware to go with the napkins for an amazing place setting like these gold metallic paper dinner plates and black and white square dessert plates.

Gold Aqua Black and White Partyware

To add some pop and sparkle to the dining table (every girl needs a little sparkle, right?) I decided to use an aqua sequin tablecloth and a bold black and white striped table runner I already own. Place gold mintand black and white striped paper lanterns all around the party space that match the shower’s colors. This is such an easy and inexpensive way to add a festive touch to any party space.

Next, it’s all about layering to create a dynamic place setting. I started with a sparkly gold place mat then topped it with aqua chargers, gold round dinner plates, a square black and white striped plate then topped it with the square dessert napkin. I also placed a pink and gold napkin topped with gold cutlery at each place setting. How amazing does this look? TIP: Disposable cutlery, napkins and plates paired with higher end items like charger plates and linen gives your table a chic “look for less”!

DIY Charmed Flowerpot Centerpiece

Next, it’s time to design the centerpieces for the table. I love how this set of clear bottle vases look paired with a single flower in each. Since the main centerpiece has some height to it, I decided to pair it with shorter complimentary centerpieces to fill out the table. Here I thought it would be fun to create “charmed flower pots” to keep with the “Charmed” theme.

Charmed Shower Craft Activity & Favors

Give your guests a fun craft activity that everyone can do at the shower and then take home with them. Set all the craft supplies up on a table to add additional decor to your shower. Guests made their own charmed flower pots and charm bracelets. You can check out my DIY post here for a shopping list and instructions on what you’ll need to make these gorgeous charm bracelets.

Set Up Snack and Dessert Stations

Be sure to have a variety of sweet treats for your guests to enjoy during the party. One of my favorite & easy snack ideas to whip up for a party are these Sweet & Salty Popcorn Mix-Ins. Setting up a mini dessert station is super easy with these small apothecary style glass jar set, clear candy scoops and candy from Oriental Trading. The jars are smaller than normal size apothecary jars which makes them more economical when setting up a mini dessert station. Fill the jars with candy like these gold caramel chocolate balls that match your shower’s decor. Don’t forget to have take home bags available for your guests to carry their flower pots and take home sweet treats in. How amazing are these black & gold glitter wedding bags? They fit with the shower’s decor perfectly!
